A vibrant and important part of English folk culture the Hobby Horse (it was once known as a ‘Cock Horse’, as in the rhyme) has been a feature of children’s play for centuries. Just as children drive pedal cars and push cars, or have toy steering wheels, imitating their Mums and Dads, so children rode, galloped and whinnied with their Cock Horses, for the same reasons.
